Tomato, tomato!

Every year some Italians come to the property where we live and pick the edible mushrooms.  Last year we met them and they shared their lunch with us - homemade cured proscuito, homemade pickled eggplant, bread rolls and what they called 'Peragini' tomatoes.  Everything was delicious!  And they left me with one precious, half-ripe Peragini.  They call them Peragini Tomatoes because they're Italian neighbour, Mr Peragini, gave them to them!

So I left the gem to ripen on the bench and collected the seeds.  Unbeknownst to me, Peraginis can yield some very big tomatoes and I was surprised to find this one reach this size!  It weighs 550g!  They are a fleshy tomato, like Grosse Lisse, but very different in shape.  I'm not eating tomatoes at the moment because is effects Nahlia badly, but Ulf tells me they're delicious!  I have cooked some up and bottled them for later devouring!   Let's see if I can take some seeds with me to Germany....!

Enjoying the garden

Aphids have struck the radishes with disease!  It's so sad...  I planted a lot this year, successively, as Ulf loves them so much.  I guess the right weather conditions and enough 'host' plants were just too good to resist for the little pests.  As I'm trying to keep the garden as organic as possible, my only defense - or rather offense - against them is to squish them by hand.... rather a tedious exercise, but with great results.  Unfortunately I don't think the radishes will recover, though.  The damage has been done.

These lovely beauties were picked this morning - except the largest tomatoes which I just added to show you them!  Cucumbers, four types of tomatoes, lettuce, gerkins (for my love), and zucchinis are prolific at the moment.  It is such a lovely feeling to enjoy the bounty of all my hard work.

These are my summer peas!  Or snowpeas (mangetout), I'm not actually sure which they are yet.  I used the all vines from last season's crops as mulch around the tomatoes and here in front of the gerkins.  And surprise, surprise, nature gives me a few 'for free'!  No planning or sowing or extra special attention given, just push the little seeds into the earth and water the garden as normal.... and these little gifts appear!

My tomato ties have been everything from last years ties, an old t-shirt or two, or a worn out Indian silk skirt!  The extra plants that required ties this year meant that I had to make more.  And I just love the extra colour in garden!

I really put a lot my work into the garden this year than all the previous years.  I found some great tips and advice in Rhonda Hetzel's 'Down To Earth', and also a great book on organic gardening 'Organic Guide to Edible Gardens' by Jennifer Stackhouse and Debbie Reynolds.  I've put a lot of these new ideas into practice, with great results.  The garden is more abundant and healthy than I've ever had it.  I'm very happy with all that I'm learning!

I am glad that I have made the extra effort, though, as this will of course be my last vegetable garden for some time.

Cute vintage dress

'Ahhhhh...!'  My cutie pie modelling her new dress!  I love this pattern and will definitely be making it again, only in a bigger size.  This one's Prudent Baby's Snappy Toddler Top, made with extra length as a dress, and with an added pocket.

"Yay!"  She's a happy girl!

I think I'll just keep making her the things I like for as long as she will wear them!  I'm very happy with how this one turned out and LOVE that vintage floral fabric, which I found as a remnant in an op-shop (2nd hand store).   I only have about 2.5 months to make whatever I can out of my fabric stash.... taking finished items is much better than taking loads of fabric!  Let's see how much I can make!

Garden Tea Party

I love tea parties, so every year I celebrate my birthday with one!  This year I tried a new German torte recipe - Raspberry Torte with Joghurt-Cream.... yum!!  It's five layers took me four days to put together, but it was well worth the effort.  I also loved the idea of hanging my mother's, grandmother's and great-grandmother's hand embroided doilies as decorations.  Lovely!  I realised later that they were there celebrating with me through their beautiful work and fine stitches.

Oh, it was a lovely day, and one to be remembered for great friends, delicious food, beautiful 'things', a swim in the pool alone, and a gorgeous pink sunset to end the day was a gift from heaven.  I am happy!  My last birthday tea party in Lilydale and it couldn't have been more lovely.  Thank you.
